The auditory Expression ‘AUM’, as was the expression ‘Brahman‘, was a Mantric term meant for Yagnic formalities before it took on conventional meaning.
‘AUM’ is made up of three pronounced terms, the beginning vowel ‘A’, the ending consonant ‘M’, and the middle ‘oo!’. And a terminal component ‘Silence’, the necessary binary complement that makes audible the sonant expressions. They, between their stretch capture all of spoken sound and symbolically mark all ‘Expression’ [The ‘Whole’].
In time ‘Silence’, in the hands of the Pious takes on a new meaning. It is now the mystic ‘Immaculately Pure’ [Turiya].
This ‘Immaculately Pure’ now gets foisted with aspects and characteristics and overlaid with inscrutable connotations. As with all other such reifications it takes on a life of its own.
The same parallel regression occurs much later in the evolution of the Symbol ‘0’ when it is reduced to the Concept of Nothing, the Idea of Absence. Instead of the assignment of ‘Purity’, the Symbol ‘0’ is given ‘Properties’ by the Mathematicians. See later Posts.
